What are your services like? Traditional or contemporary? Hymns or contemporary songs?
Our services tend to be on the more contemporary side. We do try to include hymns of hymn arrangements on a regular basis because we donÍt want to lose connections with our roots and a great theology contained in traditional hymnody. At times, we also try to include stories of how hymns were written so folks have a sense of the spiritual issues involved in the birthing of some of the music we sing, both traditional and contemporary. We also use drama and media pieces on a large screen to help connect with those individuals whose learning style is more wired in to these approaches. We seek to develop a theme for each service that relates to the message to help everyone focus on the emphasis of the day.
Is the preaching expository of going through a book or more topical each Sunday?
We do it all depending on the sermon series. We generally try to do one or two book/expository series each year. A series will run from 4 to 8 weeks generally. We also do two topical sermon series and two times a year we seek to tie the sermon series in with the small group discussions. Generally during Advent and Lent, we will do a series that will help us prepare to celebrate the meaning of Christmas and Easter.
Would you describe your doctrines to be more like the doctrines of grace like Luther and Calvin?
Yes. Our church developed out of the spiritual awakenings in Scandinavia 150 years ago, and traces its roots to the Protestant Reformation. Pietism has also had a great influence on us. Our Web site has Links to the sites where you can find out more about this if interested. We want to help each person cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and know that their sins can be forgiven by trusting in the work Jesus accomplished on our behalf on the cross. As a church, we try to focus on the major issues like personal evangelism, knowing God's word and participating in God's work and mission. We like the statement that summarizes how we seek to live in Christian community and mission that says, "In the essentials, Agreement; in the nonessentials, openness; in all discussion, openness."
Is your church charismatic?
No, however we believe that every person who says that Jesus is Lord can do so because the Holy Spirit is in them, so in that sense all people who have a relationship with Jesus Christ have the Spirit in them. We also believe that all the spiritual gifts mentioned in scripture remain active and available for God's people today.
