The 4 R's

Reading, 'Riting, 'Rithmetic, and...

It's back to school time, with bright yellow buses traversing the neighborhoods and kids with full backpacks trudging down the sidewalks. Schools, of course, teach lessons about reading, writing, arithmetic and such. All are important topics, yet none provides true wisdom.

One of the wisest figures in the Bible, King Solomon, used a house as a metaphor for a person's life or family when inspired with, "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established." Proverbs 24:3 The wisdom he spoke of is that which Psalm 111:10 tells us begins with the "fear" of the Lord--a humble and reverential trust in God. This trust leads us to seek and follow His truth found in the Word, which culminates in the building of our spiritual and relational lives upon the "rock of our Redeemer". The Lord, in His loving care, provides us His wisdom for daily living on which our house (i.e., our families, ministry service, relationships, careers/schooling, resources, and faith walk) can be stewarded with confidence. In 21st century America where the learned are many, the truly wise are few.

During this time of year when kids are heading back to school to grow in their knowledge of the three R's (all noble endeavors indeed), we would be wise to remember that as Christians were called to learn a fourth R--or more accurately the first R--Reverence for our Holy God. Reverence sets us on a path towards wisdom and faithful stewardship of "our house".
